Why am I being asked about source of funds?

A source-of-funds check helps Quppy or the applicable service provider understand where the fiat money or crypto used for a particular transaction or account activity came from and whether that origin is consistent with the customer profile and lawful use of the service. The check can be requested during onboarding or later and can require an explanation supported by documents or blockchain evidence.

What does “source of funds” mean?

Source of funds describes the activity, event, business, occupation, employment or other legitimate origin that generated the specific money or crypto being used.

Examples:

  • salary or professional income;
  • business revenue;
  • savings accumulated from documented income;
  • sale of property, shares or another asset;
  • inheritance or gift;
  • investment proceeds;
  • loan from a documented lender;
  • transfer from another account owned by the user;
  • crypto purchased through a regulated platform;
  • mining, staking or other crypto activity where supported by evidence.

It is not enough to say only that the funds came “from my bank account” or “from my wallet”. The review can ask how the funds originally entered that account or wallet.

Why can Quppy or a provider request this information?

The information can be needed to:

  • establish that activity is consistent with the known customer profile;
  • identify suspicious, fraudulent or sanctioned funds;
  • assess a large, unusual or complex transaction;
  • understand transfers involving an external wallet or another platform;
  • comply with anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing obligations;
  • respond to a payment or crypto provider’s request;
  • decide whether a transaction can be processed, released, returned or rejected;
  • maintain evidence required by a regulator or law.

A request is not, by itself, an accusation of unlawful activity.

When can a source-of-funds check happen?

It can happen:

  • during initial verification;
  • when a fiat or crypto service is activated;
  • before a transfer or exchange is completed;
  • after a transaction is received but before it is credited;
  • when activity is materially higher than expected;
  • when the sender, beneficiary, wallet or platform is new;
  • when funds pass through several accounts or wallets;
  • when information does not match the known profile;
  • during a periodic customer review.

The review can apply to one operation or to a pattern of activity.

Which evidence can be useful?

The relevant evidence depends on the explanation.

EmploymentPayslip, employment contract, tax statement, bank statement showing salary
Business incomeInvoice, contract, company statement, tax return, payment statement
Sale of an assetSale agreement, ownership evidence, settlement statement, receipt of proceeds

Screenshots alone can be insufficient if they do not identify the account, date, amount and source. Do not edit or crop out material information.

How should I explain crypto source of funds?

A useful explanation normally connects the full path:

  • Original acquisition
  • → platform or wallet
  • → relevant blockchain transactions
  • → Quppy deposit or exchange

You can be asked for:

  • name of the exchange or provider;
  • account statement or trade history;
  • transaction hash;
  • wallet address;
  • date and amount;
  • evidence that the originating account or wallet belongs to you;
  • explanation of intermediate wallets;
  • details of the sender when the crypto came from another person.

Never disclose a private key or seed phrase. Ownership can be checked through safer evidence or a provider-approved verification method.

What is the difference between source of funds and source of wealth?

Source of funds concerns the origin of the assets used in a particular transaction or set of transactions.

Source of wealth concerns how a person accumulated their overall financial position over time.

Example:

  • Source of wealth: income accumulated from operating a software business over ten years.
  • Source of funds: proceeds from the documented sale of shares used for a particular exchange.

A review can request one or both.

What happens if the evidence is incomplete?

Quppy or the provider can:

  • ask follow-up questions;
  • request a clearer or different document;
  • keep the operation pending;
  • restrict the relevant service;
  • return or reject a transfer where possible;
  • decline a transaction;
  • suspend or terminate access under the applicable terms;
  • make a report to an authority where legally required.

The reviewer may be unable to explain every internal risk indicator or legal reporting consideration.

How can I reduce delays?

  • Give a concise, chronological explanation.
  • Provide documents covering the relevant amount and period.
  • Ensure names and account details are visible.
  • Include transaction hashes for crypto transfers.
  • Explain any intermediate accounts or wallets.
  • Translate a document if requested.
  • Respond through the official secure channel.
  • Do not submit fabricated, altered or contradictory evidence.

There is no guaranteed source-of-funds review time.

FAQ

Does a source-of-funds request mean I am suspected of money laundering?

No. It can be a standard or risk-based due-diligence requirement and is not, by itself, an accusation.

Is a bank statement enough?

Sometimes, but not always. A statement may show where funds arrived from without explaining how they were originally generated.

Can I provide a screenshot?

A screenshot can help, but a full official statement or export may be required if the screenshot does not show enough information.

Do I need to share a private key?

No. Never share a private key or seed phrase.

Can Quppy ask about an external wallet?

Yes. The provider can request wallet, sender, beneficiary and transaction information for AML/CFT and Travel Rule purposes.

What if the funds were a gift?

You may be asked for a gift explanation or agreement and information showing the donor and lawful origin of the funds.

What if I do not provide the information?

The affected transaction or service may remain limited, be rejected, returned, suspended or closed under the applicable terms.

How long does the review take?

There is no single guaranteed time. It depends on the source, evidence, transaction and provider review.

Explanatory note

This article explains the current Quppy product and compliance configuration. The applicable Quppy and service-provider terms, country eligibility rules, privacy notices and information shown in the app prevail if they differ from this article.

Verification and compliance

Why am I being asked about source of wealth?

A source-of-wealth check helps Quppy or the applicable service provider understand how a customer accumulated their overall financial position over time. It can be required for enhanced due diligence, a high-value or complex relationship, a politically exposed person review, a Business ownership review, or activity that needs more context. The request is risk-based and does not automatically mean that the customer is suspected of wrongdoing.

Verification and compliance

Why can a Quppy transaction be delayed or rejected?

A Quppy transaction can be delayed, placed under review, returned or rejected because of payment-route rules, blockchain confirmations, incorrect details, security controls, transaction limits, provider availability, sanctions or AML/CFT checks, Travel Rule information, source-of-funds questions, or a technical incident. A pending or rejected status does not identify one specific cause, and Quppy may be legally unable to disclose every internal risk indicator.

Verification and compliance

What is the crypto Travel Rule?

The crypto Travel Rule is a regulatory requirement for crypto-asset service providers to collect, verify where required, transmit and retain information about the originator and beneficiary of a crypto transfer. In the European Union, Regulation (EU) 2023/1113 applies to covered crypto transfers from 30 December 2024. It can require Quppy’s applicable provider to ask who is sending or receiving crypto, which provider or self-hosted address is involved, and in some cases for evidence of wallet ownership or control.

Verification and compliance

Why do I need to provide information about an external wallet?

Quppy or the applicable crypto-service provider may ask for information about an external wallet to identify the sender or beneficiary, determine whether the address is self-hosted or managed by another provider, comply with the Travel Rule, assess sanctions and AML/CFT risk, and confirm that the asset and network are supported. The request can apply to deposits and withdrawals and never requires you to disclose a private key or seed phrase.
